RIDING THE WINNING WAVE WITH NATHAN CHERRINGTON
Fresh off his 2016 foray into the world of FAME, Nathan Cherrington is solidifying his stance as one of the industry’s most gifted new stylists, taking out the 2017 title for AHFA Newcomer of the Year. We caught up with Nathan for a scoop on his winning collection;
How does it all feel – feels like it’s been a surreal wave of wins!
The last few years have been good to me, having been a part of the 2016 FAME Team. I got to travel to Europe and made some lifelong friends. I had to the opportunity to be mentored by some of my hair idols like Tyler Johnston, Alan White and a fair few more. In the same year I moved my salon from Parramatta to Concord and built the salon of my dreams. After applying for this award 3 years in a row it was cool to win it this year.
How does it feel to now having won the AHFA Newcomer of the Year Award?
The feeling is pretty surreal. You work so hard getting an idea out of your head and make it come to life not knowing what people will think. Then once it’s over, it’s great knowing some people appreciate your work and understand the message or concept your trying to get across.
Also, having concluded your time with FAME Team – how has that whole experience been?
Being in FAME team was one of the best years in my career. It gives you a chance to step outside the comfort zone you’re in and strip back yourself to help you re-develop yourself and skills. You get to be mentored by the best in the business and show your skills in London on the main stage! It helped me develop my sessions and photographic skills because we got to have a few days with Alan White and Lauren McCowan.
How has this affected your salon and business and clientele?
It has help with the business as well, clients love hearing about the shoots and the creative stuff we do in the salon in general. I’ve had clients book in with me because they saw the awards on social media so its boosted clientele and it’s great for the staff as well they love being involved and hopefully it inspires them to get in and start their own creative journeys.
What is your next goal?
Is to continually develop my style with session and photographic work. I want to try and enter the AHFA and EXPO award, but I’m not sure on the categories I’d like to enter. I always decide that after the shoot. I also want to give back & help others bring out their creative side.
What is your advice for up and coming hair stylists?
Always develop yourself, inspire yourself, and stay humble. Say please and thank you. And always wear clean and cool shoes!
